Federal Pell Grants And Scholarships Pay College Tuition

Federal Pell Grants and college scholarships have been used by many students to help meet the rising costs of college tuition payments. These free sources of financial aid for university students have allowed many the opportunity to pursue an education when they would otherwise be unable to afford to do so.

There are a variety of scholarships and grants that may be available to students depending on their situation, university, and their chosen degree or career path. Over the past months, scholarships have been sought out by countless students as a way to meet the costs that come with attending a university or college. While traditional college classes can be quite expensive, there have been many students who have turned to community colleges or online universities as a way to earn their education and have used financial assistance to meet the costs of these educational pursuits as well.

Students also require funding to help with additional costs outside of tuition like textbooks or room and board, but these costs can also be met through Federal Pell Grants funds or scholarships. While scholarships can range in size and their sources can vary, there are countless types of scholarships and grants that can be made available to almost any student.

Federal grants are a highly sought out source of financial assistance and can be given, again, based on financial need, as well as, to students who may be pursuing a specific degree, like education or a career in science, math, or another field that may not be highly populated. Also, specialized Federal Grants like those for students whose parent was killed in the Iraq War or Afghanistan War may also receive financial aid.

While there have been students who have needed federal student loans or private student loans as a way to supplement their financial aid to pay college costs, changes in student loan lending practices may provide more funding for free financial aid sources like Federal Pell Grants. Pell Grants are typically given based on a student’s financial need, meaning that if a student comes from a low income situation they can qualify for this free federal financial assistance to possibly pay the majority of or the entirety of their college costs.

Simply put, as college tuition costs increase more and more students are looking for funding to help them meet these tuition, fees, and additional costs which cannot be met out of pocket. While it may take time and a great deal of research, there are endless amounts of scholarships available for almost any student in their educational pursuits and grants, like the Pell Grants, have also been providing college students with a way to earn their education in the hopes of beginning a career after college.

High Tuition Leads To Higher Drop Out Rate

As the economy continues to suffer and unemployment rates stay high, paying for tuition is becoming harder and harder. It doesn’t help that the average college tuition is still continuing to increase!

A study entitled, “With Their Whole Lives Ahead of Them,” surveyed 614, 22-30 years old that were unable to complete a degree but had attended school. The study found that six out of every ten participants were unable to finish due to their inability to balance academics with work.

Due to the recession, it is becoming harder for families to support there children through school. To make matters worse, scholarships, financial aid, loans, and grants are becoming harder to receive.

M.J. Alhabeeb, Jr. is currently facing troubles like these. Alhabeeb, Jr. began attending the University of California, Los Angeles to study film in the fall of 2008 with a student loan of $65,000 for the 2008-09 academic year. However, when he returned for his sophomore year, the university told him they weren’t going to give him any money.

Alhabeeb, Jr. has been forced to take on a job and cut down his classes to two a semester so he can pay for school. Unfortunately, situations like these are occurring all over the United States.

In Alhabeeb, Jr.’s case, he was informed of his misfortune at the beginning of a semester before class registration. Some individuals are finding themselves in an even tougher spot. Currently, most college institutions do not offer tuition reimbursement unless the request is submitted prior to the start of classes or the student is unable to attend for medical reasons. Due to this, if you were to find yourself in a situation like Alhabeeb’s mid semester, you would still be liable for the cost of classes regardless if you are unable to attend.
